Scattered Confessions -
Dawn DeSimone -
2003 |
Dawn DeSimone may not be the first recording artist to make sense of such diverse influences as The Osmonds, Fleetwood Mac and Nirvana, but she does so with the focus and conviction that her more ironic-minded contemporaries lack.
With a voice evocative of Heather Nova, Sheryl Crow and Stevie Nicks (perhaps a DeSimone cover of "Landslide" would better convey the solemn loneliness of Nicks' classic than the ubiquitous Dixie Chicks version?), DeSimone delivers earthy and personal testimonials that are refreshingly free of the arch and self conscious postures of most modern singer-songwriters.
Her assured vocals are warmly married to minimal acoustic guitars & light percussion that move around freely while allowing her voice to command and direct the music; as well performed as the music is on Scattered Confessions, one can also feel DeSimone is just as at ease with simple acoustic and scented candle accompaniment.
DeSimone, and Scattered Confessions in particular, never purports to be in on some kind of joke; while her looks and charm exude star quality, her delivery is entirely personal, authentic and sincere.
The enhanced CD also has the "Ave A Me" video. |

Nourishment Electric -
Nourishment -
2003 |
Not content to rest on how well her natural, sultry voice lays in bed with such genres as soft acoustic pop (Scattered Confessions) and echoing chamber-pot (Project Pollen), Dawn DeSimone recorded this blues/psych/rock collaboration with guitarist & songwriter Jay Moran in 2000.

More of an experiment than a recontextualization of her musical direction, Nourishment:Electric rides Moran’s big boogie riffs and reverb rich psych-scapes through lyrical terrain that DeSimone fans will find comfortingly familiar.
That isn’t to say, of course, that DeSimone hasn’t evolved as a songwriter (or, most importantly, a person). But instead of following the “career plan” blueprint that record companies “encourage” for young women in this business (1st album: “I Am Wholesome & Safe” or “I Have Artistic Credibility”; 2nd album: “I Am Sexually Liberated” or “I Am In Control, Dammit!”, etc.), her songwriting is allowed to organically become whatever it wishes
“Day Dream” asserts itself as the kind of track Sheryl Crow pays record label people big bucks for, but all-too-often doesn’t get. Moran’s influence and guitar work dominate this track, and DeSimone’s performance suggests what ‘90s Crowes or ‘70s Stones might have sounded like with the benefit of the Y chromosome.
The duo can also neatly fold and pack away the swagger on command; the incandescent “Galway” shimmers and invokes both a sea breeze and Galaxie 500 by way of Led Zeppelin.

Nourishment -
2003 |
East Coast folk-blues recorded the old fashioned way!

The acoustic music was my nourishment during a very dark time in my life. The lyrics reflect this dark side but also reflect my struggle to cope and to see and feel hope. The vocals are spiritual and I believe the overall vibe has the Alice in Wonderland experience from my perspective at the time. This was a collaborative effort with songrwriter/musician Jay Moran, and there are certain tracks that add in Sonwriter/musician Bob Huffine's approach as well. Most of the songs were written and recorded pre-911 between 1998 and 2000! I have recently rediscovered this side of my nature and am craving some nourishment as we speak! lolololol!! Hope you recieve some as well! This album is dedicated to Mother Earth! (see Smell it!) Sometime's it's in the air!
